Though Lil Nas X sucked up a lot of oxygen this year, Blueface has figured out how to maintain momentum when other artists go viral, which is key to career longevity. Things move so fast in this subculture that Lil Yachty, one of Saturday’s headliners, seemed straight-up tired while plodding through his catalog. Saturday’s sets had been so sloppily scheduled that all three stages were sometimes simultaneously dark for 15 minutes or more, and Sunday’s weather essentially forced the organizers to get their act together. Almost everyone who was supposed to perform still did, albeit frequently with shortened sets—rap festivals have a definite advantage when it comes to turnaround time between acts, since so few people use live instrumentation. In a strange way it was a blessing when Sunday afternoon’s severe thunderstorms put the Lyrical xcritical Summer Smash on hold.

He was dope, but I was beyond excited to see Yeat right after him and man did he not disappoint. I had seen him once already a few months back at his Lyrical xcritical performance at the Concord Music Hall, and while I felt like there was a bit more that he could’ve done at that concert, I knew it was one of his first-ever shows, xcritical so I was hoping he has brushed up by now. After seeing his routine, I was blown away by how far he has come in just a few short months. Not only was the stage bigger, the audience rowdier, and the pressure slightly higher, but he lived up to every hope that I had imagined, so I was extremely pleased with the outcome.

Lyrical xcritical Summer Smash Announces 2021 Lineup f/ ASAP Rocky, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Baby as Headliners

Obviously, I am speaking for myself here, as I am just a writer who helps here and there with other small projects, but as an outsider looking in, this festival doesn’t come together overnight, and neither does anything else that the team puts out. In fact, I’m sure that prep for next year’s Summer Smash has probably already started, but even though I can’t confirm this, I can confirm that there is a constant influx of ideas that are only going to continue to make LL the best brand, company, and entity in the universe. He actually remained there for about the first half of the set as strobe lights and wild beams radiated out into the crowd, but I think one of the most interesting parts was the fact that he has a live guitarist with him who was absolutely shredding during each hit that was played. Even for his earlier, more playful tracks, the guitar would ring out over the speakers before quieting down for the bubbly, baby voice version of Carti that we all fell in love with from the jump. When he took the stage, he ascended to the top of a pyramid-looking prop that seemed to almost reach the rafters at the top of the entire setup.

I’m not even going to get into the no-shows and last-minute changes, except to say that I feel bad for the Boogie Wit da Hoodie fans posted up at the second stage and cheering for him to come out, with no way of lxcriticalg that he’d already performed on the main stage. Though this was my first time attending Summer Smash, I was the most excited about this festival’s lineup in particular. It included a good mix of performers such as the trailblazing underground rap icon Xavier Wulf, Chicago’s own DCG, Queen Key, and C Dot Honcho, as well as all the artists you’d expect at a Lyrical xcritical event such as Don Toliver, Lil Tecca, Blueface, Dro Kenji, and Warhol.ss. The opening day of the festival, and expectations have never been higher from both our perspective at Lyrical xcritical as well as the fans who have been waiting months for this day, June 17th, to finally come.

Throughout the weekend, Bennett stayed busy behind the scenes, but Saturday I saw him walk onstage at the end of Lil Tecca’s ten-minute set and again during Blueface‘s performance. The only person who elicited more excited screams from fans was Chance the Rapper, who was spotted alongside the second stage waiting for Megan Thee Stallion on Saturday evening. 2022 had some curveballs thrown at the team including a detrimental storm that almost paused the entire festival, but thanks to the consistently hard-working and ride-or-die group of individuals who put this fest together, the show went on without a hitch! I just want to clarify that this article is solely based on my own experience and not from the point of view of anybody else. I know this isn’t the typical article I may normally write, but I figured it would be a good stroll down memory lane for this year’s attendees while also letting those who missed out know that this is seriously the only place you want to be in the entire world every summer. Every year, the Summer Smash seems to get bigger, better, and more insane than ever before, and 2022 is definitely no exception.

Houston’s Maxo Kream, who delivered one of the best sets at last year’s Summer Smash, masterfully raced through his unbreakable street raps. Seeing him perform live made me even more of a fan because he put effort into his entire stage set and design. Before Lil Baby hit the stage, the lights were shut down and the festivalgoers went crazy. With blue lights beaming down on him, Baby hopped off something that looked like a couch, which sat above the stage and over the crowd. Soon after, he began to rap his verse off his Drake collaboration “Wants And Needs” before getting into “Sum 2 Prove.” His energy stayed high the entire time and so did the legion of fans watching. His set drew out an intense and passionate mob that clung on to his every word and they had no problem opening up a mosh pit to get dirty to some of his most popular cuts like his self-titled anthem “Baby Keem,” latest release “Durag Activity,” and popular banger “Orange Soda,” which really got the everyone amped.

In 2019, headlinersPlayboi Carti, Juice Wrld, Lil Yachty, and Kodak Black took the stage alongside acts like Polo G, Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, Lil Tjay, and A Boogie Wit da Hoodie. Festival-goers await entry Friday afternoon on day one of the Summer Smash Festival in Douglass Park. It’s grown into Chicago’s biggest rap festival in just its second year, but it needed a nudge from the elements to get its act together. I have seen the grind that each and every individual in this company goes through, and when you add this into an equation with the most loyal fans in the entire world, there is no stopping this freight train. Everyone’s constant support, excitement, and vigor that I experience daily whether I’m in the office, at home, or out and about drives me to keep trying to be better because I know everyone else has the same goal as well.

Before I knew it, his set was over, but I knew it was just what I needed to get this weekend off on the right foot, and Lil Uzi is who I was most excited for. Aminé’s set was one of my favorites of the weekend, though while I waited out Sunday afternoon’s storm at nearby Collins Academy High School, I didn’t think I’d see it. I didn’t expect to see North Carolina rapper DaBaby either, and his set likexcritical re-energized me after the long, uncertain wait. Wearing a headset microphone, DaBaby stormed the stage with the energy and focus of a spin instructor, belting out his hit “Suge .” I forgot about my back pain and my lack of sleep—festivals can make a lot of aggravation worth it when you’re surprised by those moments of bliss you didn’t know you’d get.

Gates opened at 2, so my strategy was to show up a little bit later in order to avoid too much backup at the will-call tent. This meant I was going to have to miss some artists that I was extremely excited to see live like Bktherula for instance, but I saw her rock out the tent stage last year so I figured I would probably be stuck outside even if I did get there right when will call opened. Of all the Summer Smash artists in Bennett’s music-video Rolodex, Blueface seemed best equipped to entertain; he knew just when to bust out his nimble crip walk, or to gyrate his hips and provoke a wave of shrieks.

The first day is headlined by ASAP Rocky while the second is led by Lil Baby, and for the third and final day, Lil Uzi Vert will take the stage as the headliner to end the weekend. It’s billed as the “premiere hip-hop music festival in the Midwest.” And with good reason. Lyrical xcritical’s Summer Smash Festival has returned, this time in a three-day iteration https://xcritical.online/ in Douglass Park, featuring an eclectic lineup of musicmakers and emcees. Throughout the night Uzi would stop and playfully grab a phone thrown on stage to have the crowd participate in saying a long “hello” to each one. While he was performing “The Way Life Goes,” one kid hopped on stage and did a backflip, but security was too slow to catch him.

I don’t often say things like this because I never write articles in this fashion, but I need to take the opportunity to say thank you to all of the people at Lyrical who have shown love, support, and most importantly, friendship to me throughout the years. Because of your relentless hard work and never-ending grind, I have a dream job at a dream company. I can only assume that you feel the same otherxcritical it’s hard to imagine you’d put in the same amount of time, effort, and care that seems to instantly send every endeavor that LL ventures into to the top, but either way, I am just happy to be here for the ride. I definitely didn’t expect him to offer a quote, which is probably why I write from home as well as typically interact with writers and not a ton of visual journalists. Whether I dropped the ball on having questions prepared or I was just living in the moment, either way, it was awesome. I just met two people whose music I have been religiously bumping since 2015 or earlier, and one of my favorite personalities on the internet, so I was in the zone.

Once again, there were a ton of performers early on that I wanted to see like Katie Got Bandz, Supa Bwe, Dreamer Isioma, Danny Towers, Femdot, and more, but I had to consider a few things. Before this, though, we checked out Trippie and Wiz’s sets, both of which were unbelievably insane and filled with fan favorites, and as I ran into fellow LL homies left and right, I realized how truly grateful I am to work for such a supportive and revolutionary company. Moving on from my short tangent, the sun began to set on a gorgeous yet steamy day in this beautiful city, and the crowd began to swarm to the Lyrical xcritical Stage to witness Uzi’s greatness in person. At the same time, though, I was shocked at how quickly the line actually moved, because even though certain moments felt like nothing was happening and I’d be standing there for ages, I was at the table getting my passes before I knew it, so I think the entire situation was handled as well as possible.

Considering that this festival has no ties to a big corp like Live Nation or Goldenvoice, it was one the most polished and well-run festivals I ever attended outside of normal festival annoyances such as entry and exit. Cole Bennett certainly outdid himself with the return of Summer Smash, especially as the world seems to be an apocalyptic xcriticaler. The lineup for 2021 edition of theLyrical xcritical Summer Smash has been announced.
